Frank D. Stout family records, 1875-1944.

Description: This is an artificial collection of records pertaining to Frank D. Stout and his family; particularly his daughter Calista. Frank Stout was born in 1854, the son of Henry (also the brother of James Huff Stout) one of the founders of the Knapp, Stout & Co. Company. This company was reputed to be the largest lumber company in the world during the 1870s & 1880s. Frank worked for the company, but in his own right made a fortune in railroads, lumbering, and the Highland Stock Farm. When he died in 1927 he was considered one of the ten richest men in Chicago leaving an estate of well over $10 million. He was married to Clara Wales and they had five children; Henry Lane, Katherine, Calista, Eleanor, and Allison. This collection contains information on the Knapp, Stout & Co. Company; including a hand drawn plat map of Barron and adjacent counties (believed to have been drawn by Jacob Miller), ledgers (2) on company holdings in Barron County, and certificates of stock. Information on the Island of Happy Days, the family summer home in Barron County, includes correspondence and photographs of the home and surrounding areas. Of special interest is correspondence on how Frank acquired a remarkable art collection and correspondence concerning James Huff Stout, the founder of the Stout Institute. Most of the rest of the collection contains photographs, photo albums, correspondence, and miscelllaneous materials related to the Calista Stout and other members of the Stout Family.
